What are the goals for Identity Theft Victim Assistance Online Training: Supporting Victims' Financial and Emotional Recovery?

The overall goal for this e-learning training is to provide a user-friendly tool that will teach victim service providers and allied professionals the knowledge and skills they need to more effectively serve victims of identity theft and assist with their financial and emotional recovery.

When learners complete this training, they can expect to be able to:

  • Ask relevant questions to ascertain the best way to help each victim, given his or her particular situation.
  • Display empathy with and sensitivity to what victims are experiencing throughout the intake, assist with recovery, and support phases of the recovery process.
  • Respectfully advise victims on the proper recovery procedures and validate their actions and feelings throughout the advocacy process.

What is included in Identity Theft Victim Assistance Online Training: Supporting Victims' Financial and Emotional Recovery?

The training has two modules: Explore and Case Studies.

  • Explore module. This module is similar to a reference library. You can view information on the types of identity theft, the various forms and paperwork that may need to be completed, referral agencies and resources, and information on victims' rights.
  • Case Studies module. This module contains three case studies that highlight different forms of identity theft. Each case study consists of three phases: intake, assist with recovery, and support. In each phase, you will interact with the victim in your role as a victim advocate.

Identity Theft Victim Assistance Online Training: Supporting Victims' Financial and Emotional Recovery is intended for victim service providers and allied professionals who serve victims of identity theft.

For those who have some experience in assisting identity theft victims, the training can serve as a refresher since it provides a wealth of information about resources and referral agencies and information on victims' rights.

For those who have limited or no experience in serving identity theft victims, the training provides essential information and resources, as well as an opportunity to interact with victims in case scenarios and receive feedback from an online coach.

How long does it take to complete Identity Theft Victim Assistance Online Training: Supporting Victims' Financial and Emotional Recovery?

This training is designed to be completed in 3-4 hours and does not have to be completed in one sitting. The training will highlight areas that you have completed.

Who developed Identity Theft Victim Assistance Online Training: Supporting Victims' Financial and Emotional Recovery?

This e-learning training was based on an instructor-led training by the same name that was developed by the OVC Training and Technical Assistance Center on behalf of the Office for Victims of Crime (OVC). Linda and Jay Foley, Identity Theft Resource Center; Debbie Deem, FBI; Jamie Napp, Identity Theft Action Council of Nebraska; and Joanna Crane, Federal Trade Commission served as subject matter experts and reviewers in the development of the instructor-led training. They also served as reviewers for the e-learning version and provided valuable assistance.

What type of computer capability do I need to take Identity Theft Victim Assistance Online Training: Supporting Victims' Financial and Emotional Recovery?

You will need a computer that has Internet access, as Identity Theft Victim Assistance Online Training is an Internet-based, online training. It can be used with a MAC or PC. We recommend using the latest version of Google Chrome and having the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader installed.
