Arson

Arson is the single largest dollar loss crime in the United States of America. In addition to the millions of dollars of property loss, it also can lead to the displacement of victims, serious injuries, and the loss of life. This module defines arson, identifies the six arson motive classifications, describes the effects of arson on the victims, explains how to address the specific needs of arson victims, and explains the importance of working with a multidisciplinary team.

Assault

Summary:

There are many different types of assault, and victims of assault range from children to the elderly. This module identifies different types of assault, discusses the difference between assault and battery, and provides strategies for assisting victims of assault.

Bullying

Length: 1 hour

Summary:

Bullying affects thousands of children and youth each year through physical, verbal, and cyber bullying. This module defines and recognizes the different forms of bullying, identifies those who are involved in bullying situations, identifies the effects of bullying on victims and the perpetrator, identifies the motivations of children and youth who bully and the risk factors of children who are bullied, and describes ways to help children and youth who are bullied, including helping victims in the short term, and prevention strategies to share with schools in the long term.

Child Abuse and Neglect

Summary:

Victimization by child abuse and neglect presents some of the most difficult and stressful cases faced by service providers and advocates. Child victims are extremely vulnerable, often completely helpless, and often are greatly harmed by their victimizations. We'll explore how child abuse affects children, and how to appropriately respond to children affected by this crime.

Cyber Fraud

The Cyber Fraud module includes information on the common types of Internet scams and resources available for victims of cyber fraud. It also includes information on how criminals use the Internet to defraud victims, common patterns present in cyber and Internet fraud, and strategies for increasing victims' online safety and coping with the emotional impact of the crime.

Financial Crimes

There are many types of financial crimes, and the rapidly changing technologies that benefit consumers are inevitably exploited by criminals. This module explores the common types of financial crimes; common patterns present in financial crimes; how to locate resources for victims of financial crimes, especially mortgage fraud; and how to help victims identify personal strategies for coping with the emotional impact of the crime and preventing revictimization.

Hate and Bias Crimes

Summary:

Hate and bias crimes are criminal offenses motivated in whole or in part by the offender's bias against race, gender or gender identity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or ethnicity. This module explores different types of hate and bias crimes, the impact hate and bias crimes have on individual victims and the communities they live in and belong to, barriers victims face in seeking help, and strategies for helping victims of hate and bias crimes.

Human Trafficking

Summary:

Human trafficking is often referred to as modern day slavery. Victims of trafficking are compelled to labor or provide commercial sex services against their will. This module describes human trafficking and discusses how to spot red flags, or indicators, of human trafficking. The module also provides tips for building a comprehensive and trauma-informed referral network to help victims of human trafficking.

Identity Theft

Virtually every American adult either knows a victim or is a victim of identity theft. This module includes the definition of identity theft, information on who is at the highest risk of being victimized by identity theft, information about laws that support identity theft victims, and strategies to help victims recover from identity theft.

Intimate partner violence, or IPV, is sometimes known as domestic violence, and it affects millions of persons in the U.S. regardless of marital status, sexual orientation, race, age, religion, education, or economic status. This module will go into detail on how victim service providers can assist victims of intimate partner violence, and how to help victims identify the goals they seek in getting help, and describe how to respond appropriately to victims of intimate partner violence.

Mass Violence and Terrorism

Mass violence and terrorism are of concern to the public at large because events seem to be random, and perpetrators generally have a definitive plan and their own logic behind their attacks. This module defines terrorism and mass violence, describes the negative effects on victims and survivors following a mass violence or terrorism event, identifies potential issues arising from mass violence or terrorism events, identifies responders to mass violence incidents, identifies partnerships to develop prior to a mass violence event, identifies potential needs of victims and communities after a terrorism and mass violence event, and identifies resources for victims and communities.

Property Crime

Length: 30 minutes

Summary:

Property crime can affect anyone, and includes burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. This module includes identifying the major categories of property crime, the rate at which property crime occurs in the United States, and the impact this type of crime has on victims. It also provides information on resources available to help victims recover from property crime.

Sexual Assault

Length: 45 minutes

Summary:

The Sexual Assault module includes information related to sexual assault and sexual violence. It includes definitions of the terms sexual violence and sexual assault; information about the victim service provider's role in relation to others working as part of a Sexual Assault Response Team (SART), including differentiating the roles of victim service providers, SART, and other members of the SART; methods to assess the physical and psychological impact of sexual assault; information about the potential impact of sexual assault on various populations; and strategies to respond appropriately to victims of sexual assault.

Stalking is a pervasive and dangerous crime that affects millions of people each year. It is a crime in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Territories, and the Federal Government. This module defines stalking, identifies several common stalking behaviors, explains how social minimization and normalization of stalking affects our ability to recognize the crime of stalking, and identifies several strategies to assist stalking victims.

Teen Relationship Abuse

Length: 45 minutes

Teenagers are impressionable and influenced by the world around them, which in turn can impact the way they view relationships and what they believe is or is not abusive behavior. This module identifies warning signs of teen relationship abuse, explores the effect relationship abuse has on teens, applies a trauma-informed approach when providing services to teen victims of relationship abuse, and identifies sources for helping teen victims of relationship abuse.
