Curriculum Design for Victim Service Providers

1.4 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be offered for this training.

Victim service providers who conduct their own trainings will find the tools they need to custom design effective trainings for their staff and others in the community. This training is appropriate for individuals who design and deliver curricula, who are involved in the planning and development of training, or have some background in either adult education or instructional design. In this 2-day training you will first listen to skills-based lectures, then practice what you have learned in large-group activities, and end by creating a training module for your own organization. The goal is to strengthen your abilities to design, implement, and evaluate your training programs.

Active participation in each of the following training modules will help you accomplish these specific learning objectives:

  • Teaching Adults
    • Contrast adult learning with traditional classroom learning.
    • Describe the variables affecting adult learning.
    • Describe four different types of adult learning approaches.
  • Assessing Training Needs
    • Identify the benefits of a training needs analysis.
    • Determine if training is the best solution to a problem or issue.
    • Identify performance gaps to address in training.
    • Develop a needs analysis plan for your training.
  • Designing Training
    • Identify one or more organizational goals for training.
    • Write SMART learning objectives.
    • Divide and sequence content for a logical flow.
    • Create activities that engage participants.
    • Describe the information necessary for a design document.
  • Developing Training
    • Describe how to develop an Instructor's Manual.
    • Describe how to develop a Participant's Manual.
    • List other training materials and approaches.
    • Explain why reviews of training materials are needed.
  • Implementing and Delivering Training
    • List activities that help instructors prepare for training.
    • Identify communication strengths and weaknesses.
    • Identify characteristics that illustrate the five core components of effective communication.
    • Describe onsite preparations and audio/visual aids that can help presentations go smoothly.
  • Facilitating Training
    • Distinguish between facilitation and presentation.
    • Describe how to establish the appropriate conditions for learning.
    • Describe how to handle six types of difficult participants.
    • List four steps for facilitating activities.
  • Evaluating Training
    • State three reasons why evaluation is important to the training process.
    • Define the four levels of training evaluation.
    • Describe at least three evaluation tools or techniques.
