Preparing for the Training

Reviewing the Materials

Familiarize yourself with all materials prior to training. As one step, make sure you review any participant materials that are referenced in the Facilitator Manual.

Also note the following cues that appear throughout the curriculum:

Customizing the Training

Add relevant examples from your own personal knowledge and expertise while maintaining the integrity of the training design, which is based on the principles of adult learning and active training.

Downloading the Materials

This is a downloadable training curriculum. We recommend that you create a folder for Victim Impact: Listen and Learn on your computer and download all the files you'll need into that folder rather than using the Web site during the training.

Gathering Equipment

Before the training, arrange for the following equipment:

  • Laptop PC

  • Overhead projector and easel, if necessary

  • One or two flip charts and colored markers for the facilitators to use at the front of the room

  • Small table for facilitator materials

  • Masking tape for posting chart notes

  • Blank attendance sheet

  • An adequate number of Participant Workbooks

  • Pens and paper for participants

  • Evaluation forms for participants

  • Name tents for tables

  • Name badges and tents for facilitators

  • Additional office supplies (e.g., sticky notes, stapler, tape)

Individual units may call for additional equipment (see the introductory pages of each unit's facilitator materials).

Preparing the Room

Make sure to visit the training room before the training.

  • Picture the layout, including the location of furniture and audiovisual equipment, and determine if you need any additional tables or chairs. Keep in mind that you will need a small table for your training supplies and a larger table for supplementary materials.
  • Make sure all equipment and electrical outlets are functioning.
  • Check for window shades (to control glare).
Maintain a structured and physically safe environment for learning (see Ground Rules in Unit 1: Getting Started). Encourage interaction by seating participants in small groups or in a large semicircle instead of using a traditional classroom arrangement.
